NOTE:

Like its predecessor of the same name, 'When Shapes Join Together 2' brings together the cream of the Tru Thoughts roster with some of the fresh faces emerging from the vibrant Brighton scene. Exploring music influenced by jazz, funk, hip hop and soul at a variety of tempos the album is very much a beats-oriented affair. Tracks have been supported by the likes of Gilles Peterson; Ashley Beedle, Groove Armada, Patrick Forge, Mr Thing, DJ Vadim, The Herbaliser, DJ Food, The Wiseguys and John Stapleton and was described as “the best UK beats compilation I have heard” by Andy Smith (Portishead). Bonobo kicks off the proceedings with a new version of 'Kota' that recently graced a BT ad as well as the classic 'Terrapin' - only the latter has been remixed here by Mr Scruff into a shuffling breakbeat number that leaves precious little of the original standing. Similarly, Carl Faure's remix of Quantic's anthem, 'Life In The Rain', beefs up that tune with live bass and some fat beats. Those who missed 'Super 8', the Quantic Soul Orchestra's excursion into old skool funk, will be pleased to learn that it's included here in all its original, raw glory. Jon Kennedy delivers the stomping atmospheric Smith vs Smith whereas Deeds Plus Thoughts' 'Dayton Bumps' is a funky party bumping update of the ska sound that it's impossible not to enjoy. Guildford premier crew Diversion Tactics represent by delivering a credible slice of homegrown hip hop with ‘SomeProduct’.Check the deep Bukem-esque break beats of Chroma; the gritty funk shaking of Natural Self or indeed the sound of Flevans’ kitsch Bossa-Hawaiian-jazz-gem ‘Into The Morning’. Last but not least check the shuffling, soulful jazz guitar and mellow vocals of Al Stylus' cut 'High Rise' .
